All You Need to Begin!

“Whatever you do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius and power and magic in it.” ~Goethe

So many times I hear people say that they could not do this creative project, or write, or paint because they don’t have the time. Being creative requires too much commitment. Sometimes, they never start or try because they are afraid of not having the time to finish it.

Here is a fabulous secret. Often, a person only needs ten minutes. Just 10! All you have to do is begin. Taking ten minutes isn’t about the final product, it is about jumping in, taking that deep breath, and creating. In the writing classes and workshops I have taken, many of the free writes or quick writes were only ten minutes. It allows the writer to begin without overthinking it. Once you start, something amazing will happen. You will want to create more. You will be opening a door you thought was sealed shut. Beyond that door is even more creative magic.

It could be that being creative isn’t new to you. You already make time for creativity in your life. Instead, you are looking for something fresh. Some new inspiration. Something that sparks the inner fire even more and brightens the flames. These minutes allow your creative self to stretch into other directions for a little while. When doing so, you open your creative spirit to new ideas, new ways of doing things, and alternate types of expression.

And sometimes, we are just stuck. I have been there. I feel like I have so much to do that it won’t get done. Or other times, I just don’t know where to start and I feel a bit lost. So, I take 10 minutes and commit to some creative task. Poetic quick writes, journal writing with a friend, taking photos, playing with paints are all ways that I use in intervals to help bring my creative center back. The tasks are not huge and they don’t have to be. They don’t have to be completely “ready for the world” finished. BUT they have to BEGIN somewhere.

So jump in. Can you find ten minutes to write that poem or paint a background? Or ten minutes to take as many photo’s as you can or write 200 words? 200 words in ten minutes each day for five days, is about 4 pages. 4 pages a week over 12 months is 200 pages!! The little steps make a difference. It’s your turn to begin.

Be BOLD. Use your power. Create Magic!

  2. I think sometimes it’s scary to be creative. When we are little kids we paint horses purple and scribble and are slowly directed to color inbetween the lines and make things more representative. Soon we learn that we aren’t as good as others, etc. I think it’s really important to be creative – take the plunge! Great post!!!

    • Thank you, Debra. This is so true! Creativity is replaced by what we “should” do and “how it is supposed to be done” as we get older. I think it is important to keep challenging our creative selves.
